How the WTS Score works
A consistent, explainable restaurant safety score built only from official inspection findings.
WTS Score calculator
Version 1.1.0
Every inspection begins at 100. Each cited violation removes points according to its severity. A repeat finding receives an additional fixed deduction.
| Finding | Base | Repeat add-on |
|---|---|---|
| Critical violation | -8 | -4 |
| Major violation | -4 | -2 |
| Minor violation | -1 | -1 |
| Administrative violation | -1 | -1 |
| Confirmed closure | Automatic F; score capped at 49 | |
What does not affect the score
Version 1 does not add popularity, reviews, cuisine, price, neighborhood, gluten-free availability, restaurant ownership, or the jurisdiction’s official score. Correcting a violation during the inspection is displayed, but it does not erase the original finding.
Official score vs. WTS score
Official ratings are shown exactly as issued and stored separately. The independent WTS score exists so inspection findings can be compared consistently across jurisdictions with different grading systems.
Why scoring is versioned
Every calculation stores the rule version, starting score, individual deductions, closure override, final score, and grade. If the methodology changes later, historical scores remain reproducible and explainable.
